Built in 1963 by notable mid-century, master architect, Richard Neutra, the Mariners Medical Arts Building property had over the years fallen into deterioration. Having witnessed the damage firsthand, Burnham-Ward Properties acquired the property in 2021 in order to ensure the responsible stewardship of this iconic asset. Burnham-Ward Properties enlisted ShubinDonaldson for the complicated rehabilitation of the property to its original mid-century design, including passive energy controls, site amenities, and color palette. The building embodies special architectural and mid-century modern design features that integrate interior and exterior spaces to form a setting conducive to medical treatment. Modern updates include site accessibility utilizing the historic renovation code and Cal Green code features.
Presented by AIA OC, this tour will explain how to incorporate California Historic codes into renovation projects. These codes differ from CBC and IBC codes. The tour will also review passive energy techniques, both from the original design as well as modern upgrades, and how Cal Green codes were incorporated into the rehabilitation of the complex. Presenters include Steve Thorp, Burnham-Ward Properties, Partner & Director of Acquisitions, and our very own Sieglinde Pukke, Principal at ShubinDonaldson.
