During the 2018 AIA Orange County Design Awards Gala, ShubinDonaldson’s Willoughby Duplexes project was awarded the Honor Award within the Built Residential Planned Development Category.
From the AIA Orange County:
“The jury really admired the innovative planning and organization of this project which allowed for different modes of living for different individual needs. The flexibility of the flipped and inverted plans offer important clues about housing needs in the future, and the considerations for outdoor space seem to give the project a nice feeling of home. The project’s thoughtful sighting and excellent planning promotes maximum use of space which serves as a good prototype for urban infill situations. Congratulations Shubin Donaldson.”

More about the project:
The Willoughby Duplexes encompass an entire block near the La Brea Corridor. This complex is consciously designed to create a “village-like” feel, with six two-story residences oriented in pairs with intersecting circulation and landscaping to create flow and green-space. Each pair of buildings has individual entries and driveways creating a connective opening between the residences. The duplexes are wood-framed and arranged in two alternating 3-bedroom layouts, with the living quarters on the second floor in one orientation, and on the first floor within the other.
